Atlantic City, NJ (August 23, 2014) – Out of the prize ring for 26 months since his devastating knockout loss to Randall Bailey, former welterweight world title challenger Mike “Machine Gun” Jones (26-1, 19 KOs) had largely fallen out of the public eye. He left Philadelphia (his place of birth and boxing development) for Las Vegas and was out of touch with his management and promotion for years. You could say his career stalled in part due to no lucrative fight offers coming in; but you could also say that Jones wasn’t happy with the amount of hands in his pockets.

In any event the impact of the long layoff was ring rust, and it ultimately cost Jones any kind of credibility in a deep welterweight division. Jaime Herrera (11-2, 6 KOs) stopped Jones after 7 completed rounds. From the onset you could tell Jones’ timing was off but Herrera did little to make him pay for it in the preliminary stages. However, what Jones didn’t lose in his time away from the ring was power. His left hook scored him a knockdown at the end of round 2 and another one at the start of round 3.

Unfortunately for Jones, shortly following the 2nd knockdown a cut opened outside of one of his eyes and the complexion of the fight forever changed. Initially it was thought to be the result of a head clash but after seeing Jones take more and more punishment, without his corner asking to stop the fight, it became clear that the major laceration on his face was ruled due to a punch. Jones was ahead on official scorecards 66-65 at the time the ringside physician pulled the plug. After a 30-25 start, Jones lost the last 4 rounds decisively. Round 6 could have been ruled 10-8 for Herrera even without a knockdown. Jones took his worst beating of the fight in the 6th stanza and his knee looked like it touched down at one point, but referee Earl Brown didn’t count it (which may or may not have been the right call).

After the fight Jones stated that his diminished vision adversely affected him but gave Herrera full credit for the upset. Herrera also upset 12-0 Michael Finney in his previous outing. He’s progressed well since his 8-round war with Adrian Granados.

In the co-feature of the evening Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna (14-0, 7 KOs) edged Jamaal “Da Truth” Davis (14-11-1, 6 KOs) in Cornflake’s biggest test to date. Official scores read 79-73, 78-74, and 78-73, but there was little to split the two warriors in multiple rounds. BC had the fight 77-76 for LaManna, scoring the first 3 rounds for Davis, 4-5 & 7-8 for LaManna, and the 6th even. Davis dominated the first 2 rounds with overhand rights and left hooks and was able to jab on even terms or better through 3. It wasn’t until the 4th round that LaManna demonstrated that he knew how to make good use of his height and reach advantages. Davis gradually wore down and was spent by the final round. His future as a boxer is uncertain.

On the other hand, the unbeaten, 22 year old LaManna potentially has a long future ahead of him. Given his performance against Davis, he probably shouldn’t be moved very fast. Then again, the middleweight division isn’t exactly thriving right now…

Overall “Jones vs Herrera” was an exciting night of boxing put together by matchmakers / promoters J Russell Peltz and Brittany Rogers. GFL.TV streamed the Bally’s AC card online.
